ECO-Reserves

The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) – is committed to protecting and managing the rich biodiversity of the Emirate. In this section of our website, you can see and find out more about some of our pioneering projects which are now open to the public. Please do take a look at what they offer – then please do come and visit.

When you look closely you may be surprised at the wide range of terrestrial and marine habitats, as well as the huge array of animal and plant life, that can be found in Abu Dhabi.

To enable these species to grow, thrive and multiply, we have established a number of protected areas throughout the Emirate. These are designated environments which we endeavor to nurture and keep safe from threats such as urban development and habitat degradation.

The protected areas include:

- Coral reefs
- Sea grasses and seaweeds
- Mangroves
- Sandy beaches
- Rocky shores
- Lagoons and creeks
- Intertidal flats
- Coastal sabkhas
- Sand sheets
- Dunes and mega dunes
- Alluvial and interdunal plains
- Mountains; rocky terrains and wadis and inland sabkhas.

While we are committed to protecting them, it is not our intention to keep them hidden away under lock and key. On the contrary, we are working to make these places more accessible so you can come and be enthralled by the wonders of nature you’ll find there.

We hope your visits will be fulfilling and inspire you to be even more aware of this beautiful but fragile environment that we all inhabit.

WE HAVE CREATED TWO NEW ECO-RESERVES WHICH WE INVITE YOU TO VISIT:

AL WATHBA WETLAND RESERVE

A five square kilometer marshy wetland area is home to more than 250 species of birds, from Black winged stilts to Greater spotted eagles. The main attraction is probably the massive flocks of Greater flamingos; as many as 4,000 of them spend the winter months here, with some staying all year round. Viewed closely from bird-hides and designated nature walks and trails, they make a truly spellbinding sight. Click here to find out more.

MANGROVE NATIONAL PARK

Surprisingly close to the hustle and bustle of central Abu Dhabi, this unique ecosystem provides a wonderful habitat for plants, aquatic species and bird life – not to mention a place where humans can spend some tranquil hours away from city life. There is a variety of experiences to enjoy, from kayak tours to small boat safaris and romantic sunset cruises. Click here to find out more.
