Abu Dhabi hosts an estimated 6,732 Green and Hawksbill Turtles who use its waters for foraging, while the Hawksbill also nests frequently on some offshore islands.
Mortalities have fallen considerably since hitting a peak 10 years ago while recorded Hawksbill nestings have remained at a steady rate for the past decade.
We continue to monitor the populations constantly, providing safe havens for them in our marine protected areas, and raising awareness of the need to avoid vessel strikes among relevant communities such as boat owners.
Main sources of threat: Entrapment in abandoned fishing nets, vessel strikes, habitat loss due to coastal development and construction.
Current IUCN status: Green Turtle – endangered, Hawksbill Turtle – critically endangered
