Most of us in Abu Dhabi have no idea what fresh air feels like because we spend most of our time indoors or zoom around inside our cars.
In the morning, on your way to school, you will probably smell the exhaust fumes from cars. Your window will probably be rolled up because the air conditioner is switched on.
Shaheen’s Story: “One weekend, Noora and I were staying at our cousin’s house. I could hear my cousins playing football in the freej (neighborhood). I really wanted to go out and play with them. So Noora and I ran outside to join them. Halfway through the game, Noora began coughing and gasping for air. She drew out her inhaler and began using it. I was worried about my little sister so I advised her to sit on the sidewalk for the rest of the game. Later, Noora kept asking me why the air around her was not fresh and clean enough for her to breathe properly.”
Why was Noora forced to miss the fun?
When the air is unclean with a lot of dirt, chemicals and various other particles, we say that it is polluted. It is better known as Air Pollution.
Indoor air pollution:
In the UAE, we need to also monitor the indoor air quality, since we keep our doors and windows closed most of the time while the air conditioners are on. Noora probably suffers from respiratory trouble due to the irritants in the indoor air around her home.
