Framework for sustainable development


Overview
The Environment and Energy 2003 – Exhibition and Conference, was held under the patronage of the late President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, from February 2nd to 5th 2003, at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre, coinciding with UAE’s Sixth National Environment Day.

The Conference and Exhibition was jointly organized by General Exhibition Centre (GEC) and The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), covering a wide range of environmental issues around the world such as technology innovation and energy policy dialogue, energy security and restructuring and clean environment friendly technologies for a better world. This was the beginning of a wide ranging, well informed and constructive forum with concrete proposals which will lead towards achieving sustainable development.

The main sponsor of the event was ADNOC and the co-sponsors were Offsets, Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Shell, BP, Dolphin Energy and Total fina Elf.  The co-organizers of the event were UNEP and ESCWA and the supporters were Federal Environment Agency (FEA), UNDP and UAE University.

On the sideline of the Conference and Exhibition, the first meeting of the Ministers of the Arab world responsible for environment and energy was held on February 3rd 2003. The meeting adopted the joint statement «The Abu Dhabi Declaration – a culmination of plans and strategies for achieving environmental sustainable development in the Arab region for the 21st century».

Exhibition
305 multinational companies from nearly 30 countries participated in the exhibition. The total gross area of the exhibition hall was 14,400 square meter.  The key attraction of the event was the Environment Project village which served as a platform for the exhibitors to feature their latest products and technologies. Following the opening ceremony, the Ministers responsible for Environment and Energy visited the individual pavilions and stalls of the Exhibition Hall. The number of visitors reached 6,604.

Conference
The Conference covered five main themes, 11 sub themes, a clean development mechanism workshop and a panel discussion on “Integrated Approach to Energy and Environment”.  The Conference was a platform to 50 speakers from various international, regional and local organizations out of which 41 technical papers were presented on the different themes and sub themes. There was an active participation of 1,118 people attending the conference.  The Proceedings were published and distributed.
